Why Good ESL Lessons Feel Like Games (Without Being Games)

Late on a Friday, a quiet Zoom classroom is about to end. The tutor asks yet another question — and again, only silence answers back. With a defined objective — convince the board in 10 minutes, close the sale, resolve a client complaint — students focus on doing, not just talking.
Constraints (Limits and Resources)
Games always impose rules that shape decisions. In a lesson, constraints sharpen focus the same way. Practical Checklist
- Objective: give the lesson a real-world mission ("resolve a complaint before the call ends") so students know why they're speaking
- Choices & constraints: let students pick roles or strategies, set a timer or limit information, and use those factors to create tension
- Feedback: decide in advance how students will see results — a partner's reaction, a win/lose condition, points at the end of the activity
Reframe the Design Question
Reframe your lesson design as designing a mini-game rather than a list of talking points. Next time you plan a class, don't ask "what topics will we cover?"
