At the Airport: Check-In Chaos

Practise have to, don't have to and can't for rules and obligations through a chaotic morning at the airport check-in counter. A suitcase three kilos too heavy, a bottle of perfume that can't go through security and a flight that closes in fifteen minutes — follow the rules, solve the problems and get on the plane. A practical A2 English lesson on have to / don't have to, airport vocabulary and travel situations. Ideal for adult learners, English tutors, and language schools.

Agent: Good morning. Can I see your passport and ticket, please? Mrs Brown: Here you are. Agent: Thank you. Put your suitcase here, please... Oh, I'm sorry. Your suitcase is three kilos over the limit. Mrs Brown: Three kilos? Oh no! Do I have to pay? Agent: Yes, I'm afraid you have to pay 15 euros for each extra kilo. Mrs Brown: 45 euros! Can I put some things in my carry-on bag? Agent: Yes, you can. But remember — you can't take liquids over 100 ml in your carry-on bag. Mrs Brown: OK, I'll take out my books and my shoes. Agent: Great, now it's fine. You don't have to pay. Would you like a window or an aisle seat? Mrs Brown: A window seat, please. Agent: Here's your boarding pass. Boarding is at 10:15, gate 12, so you have to be at the gate by 10 o'clock. Mrs Brown: Thank you! Is the flight on time? Agent: I'm afraid it's delayed by 30 minutes. Have a nice flight!

You're flying to Barcelona for an important business conference. Your suitcase is 26 kg.

Secret goal: Your mission: you don't want to pay for the extra kilos — find a solution! You need an aisle seat because you are very tall. Secret: you really want the business class upgrade — try to get it without asking directly.

  • Emma

You're running — you're very late! You have a carry-on bag with a big bottle of perfume (200 ml), a present for your mum's birthday.

Secret goal: Your mission: get on the flight AND keep the perfume. Ask what you can do. You want a window seat — it's your first time in Barcelona.

  • Supervisor Mark

You are the airport supervisor. You help the agent with difficult passengers.

Secret goal: Secret: the flight is delayed by one hour, but you can't tell the passengers before 10:15. You can allow ONE passenger to put things in a free airport bag (2 kg). If the agent asks, help to decide who gets the upgrade.
